Are you looking to explore career opportunities and experience meaningful lessons through volunteer work? If you are interested in education, children, or counseling, Fresno Unified School District Mentoring Programs is the spot for you! They offer teaching through Girl Power and Boys to Men after school programs. Or you can participate in one-on-one counseling opportunities in their Foster Youth Mentor Program. This is an incredible way to improve your resume all while making an impact in someone’s life. The Fresno Unified School District (FUSD) mission is to “provide an educational program with high expectations for all to learn the academic, social and emotional skills needed to become lifelong learners.” FUSD is passionate about creating a culture of mentoring, which will help their students reach the fullest academic potential.
Last year, I volunteered in the Girl Power Program where I taught a group of twelve fifth and sixth grade girls. We did activities involving building self-esteem, becoming a confident public speaker and discussing dream careers. The program creates a safe, positive environment for each girl to grow emotionally and academically. I looked forward to seeing their smiles everyday! Although they thanked me for supporting them, they are the ones who changed my life. Each girl played a role in reassuring my passion for youth and education. I discovered I want to work specifically with ages in elementary schools. I loved the program so much I decided to come back for my second year! I have returning faces from last year along with new fresh faces. As the end of the year treat, I’m hoping to take the girls on a field trip to Fresno State to show them what a day in the life of a university student is like. I hope it will be an inspiration for them to work and graduate high school!
