The winter season is wonderful due to cooler weather and amazing volunteer opportunities! One opportunity that I finally took advantage of was Zoo Boo at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo. This event is held four times in the month of October and is a great way to take your children, nephews, nieces, or anyone trick or treating in a safe space. You also get to learn about various organizations in Fresno and witness the zoo animals at night.

img_1232I heard about this event from Jumpstart  (where I worked and volunteered happily for two years) and asked if I could serve alongside them. Next thing I knew, I was driving to the Chaffee Zoo on October 21st. We were given a map, a blue vest, and the task of passing out brochures and candy bags to families. You would be surprised how many families forget to bring bags when they are rushing to the zoo and getting their kids in costumes! The families were incredibly nice and excited to receive a bag and brochure that included a map of the animals and the organizations. What I enjoy the most about volunteering, besides doing the actual service, is meeting new people. I met several Jumpstart volunteers, but I volunteered along side Karina Aguilar and Alison Alvarado.  We spent three hours at the entrance until they asked us if we could go to their spooky photo booth, which was a field filled with The Nightmare Before Christmas decorations. Additionally, we asked families who were struggling to take a photo with the entire family if we could take the picture for them.

Zoo Boo at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo was a terrific volunteer experience for me and I would definitely do it again. The Zoo Boo is only held in October, but the Chaffee Zoo has different events for every month including November and December. They will be hosting  ZooLights  for several days in December. To discover more about the different volunteer opportunities the Chaffee Zoo provides, you can visit the Fresno Chaffee Zoo Volunteer Opportunities web page.

During this season of giving, how do you aspire to give back to the community? What new service opportunity interests you?
